David Ogunde
(President)
As his father was staging the premier performance of a play
in which David later starred, David was born back stage at the
old Glover Hall in Lagos Nigeria. His
father Chief (Dr) Hubert Ogunde was the doyen of the Nigerian
Theatre and film making. David joined his father’s production
company since the age of sixteen, performing to thousands of
audiences, which always packed the halls and theatres where
they performed from Nigeria to the end of the coast of West
Africa, in Senegal. The company also performed internationally,
from Apollo Theatre in Montreal Canada to the coast of England
such as Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Chattam, Lancashire
and Southend-on-Sea.
The troupe, comprising of forty dancers, actors, actresses and
performers, performed in the then newly commissioned London’s
Fairfield Halls Croydon, Wimbledon Theatre, and was the first
African Troupe to perform in the then largest European festival
of arts held in Langollen Eisteddfod in Wales under a tent of an
audience of ten thousand on July 13th 1969. The troupe also featured
in the film ‘Oblong Box’ starring by Vincent Price
and Christopher Lee as well as a number of BBC performances.
The BBC did a one-hour documentary of Hubert Ogunde and his
works in 1980. In 1990 the company hosted and featured in the
production of ‘Mr. Johnson’ starring Pierce Brosnan,
Edward Woodward and directed by Bruce Beresford.
While with his father, David was a front line dancer, actor,
performer, and choreographer. At the age of twenty-one, he started
his own troupe ‘Kunle Ogunde Theater’, wrote his
plays, his songs and directed his own production company which
became a famous Theatre Company in Nigeria. He wrote several
plays such as ‘Ekunola’, ‘Olufadere’,
‘Innocent heads at the grove’ etc.
David became born again in 1979 and later heard the call of
God to use the same means he and his father had used, to preach
the gospel. He then started and led The Word Productions a Christian
Theatre ministry for eight years. The ministry performed to
several hundreds and thousands of Christian audiences in Nigeria
and published some of their works. Several people came to know
the Lord as a result of these performances and many of them
are still standing today in the Lord. Activities also included
regular weekly Bible study and quarterly weekend retreats, which
were designed to feed, prepare and mature actors and actresses
spiritually.
David is a writer, producer, director, choreographer, Cinematographer,
Avid and Media 100 editor, computer engineer and programmer.
